Inspection

Arch Young Adults Project was randomly inspected by Ofsted on 10th August 2007. Below is a summary of the findings of the report.

To receive a copy of the inspection report, please contact us here providing your name and details of your position and organisation along with the address to send the report to.

Ofsted carries out regular inspections on registered children's homes under the Care Standards Act 2000, and from the inspection, creates a report which details the main strengths and areas for improvement of the home being inspected. Judgements are made in relation to the outcomes for children set out in the Children Act 2004, as stated in the Every Child Matters framework:

• Helping children to be healthy
• Protecting children from harm or neglect and helping them stay safe
• Helping children achieve well and enjoy what they do
• Helping children make a positive contribution
• Achieving economic wellbeing
• Organisation

Each outcome is judged on the following scale:

Outstanding: provision is of exceptionally high quality
Good: provision is strong
Satisfactory: provision is sound
Inadequate: provision is not good enough

Arch Young Adults Project's overall quality rating is Good.

Helping children to be healthy
Rating is Good.
The report highlights and praises AYAP's work in assessing and recording health needs, creating health risk assessments, promoting healthy lifestyles and support in accessing appropriate services.

Following discussion with Ofsted in regards to difficulties faced by AYAP in supporting young people to access the Mental Health Service, the report recommends the recruitment of a mental health specialist to offer assessment services to young people, and guidance to staff. The Project has already initiated the process of recruiting a mental health specialist, and is looking forward to being able to offer a high quality assessment service to young people in the future.

Protecting children from harm or neglect and helping them stay safe
Rating is Outstanding.
The report highlights and praises AYAP's effective Risk Management and Child Protection procedures, with the participation of the young people themselves.

AYAP receives praise for dealing with bullying effectively, and for its ability to ensure a young person's safety whilst demonstrating a high level of consideration for their privacy and confidentiality.

Helping children achieve well and enjoy what they do
Rating is Outstanding.
The report praises AYAP's Support Plan which is used to provide individually designed support to young people, created in relation to the five outcomes for young people and promotes effective work with young people towards achievable and realistic targets.

The report also highlights the standard and quality of the keyworking service provided by AYAP, its effectiveness and achievements in supporting young people, and also praises the young person's action plan which is used by AYAP to encourage and support their development.

Helping children make a positive contribution
Rating is Outstanding.
The report praises AYAP's initial assessment service which checks the independency skills and support needs of new residents, reviewing their achievements and any concerns and ensures the effective planning of support.

The report also highlights AYAP's active promotion of, and ability to ensure the full participation of young people in the planning, delivery and review of the service and support provided to them, and comments on the excellent relationship between staff and young people.

Achieving economic wellbeing
Rating is Satisfactory.

The report highlights AYAP's excellent position within the city of Stoke-on-Trent for access to services, transport and education, and that young people are actively involved in deciding on the presentation of the home.

While the report recognises the high standard, safety and comfort of the accommodation provided, it raised the only required action: to ensure that the homes bathrooms are updated and brought up to standard. AYAP immediately began proceedings to ensure that this action is met and that young people are offered as comfortable and welcoming an environment in which to live as possible.

Organisation
Rating is Outstanding.
The report praises the competency and varied experience of staff, who are valued and supported and provided opportunity to increase and develop their knowledge and skills. The report also praises AYAP's established monitoring and quality assurance systems which ensures that action points are identified and followed up.
